  1. #1 Epic X-Dragon Firmware Upgrade Problem
    Hi,
my Epic X-Dragon camera started having an issue with the TC and Date (both were reseted anytime I changed the batteries) and I was told to upgrade the firmware.
But I can't upgrade the firmware higher than 6.3.98. The next version is 6.3.101. I followed all the instructions from the Red website but it didn't work, the camera doesn't accept the newer firmware.
Have anybody had similar issues and have solved it?
    Thanks.

You may need a new internal battery. The internal battery is not user serviceable.

I had the same thing with my Epic X Dragon. As expected the log-files showed that the internal battery was dead. I send in my camera to Red-Europe and had it changed. Problem fixed! Send red a log-file. Most likely they will confirm a dead internal battery.

Thank you for your comments. Do you think the impossibility to upgrade the firmware has to do with an internal battery problem?

Have you double checked that you have downloaded the correct firmware?

Which firmware is currently installed? If it is very old you might have to do a couple of previous installs to have the latest one take.

You should still be able to upgrade your firmware with a dead clock battery... That said, as Willem mentioned, you'll have to send your camera back into RED in order to swap out the clock battery... (The battery is inexpensive, but the labour and shipping will likely be ~$200.)

How can you test the internal battery?
Have an epic dragon with 1800 hrs and a stereoscopic shoot coming up where jam sync (TC & GEN off a denecke SB-T) is Critical.

Craig, as long as you don't power down it will hold the sync fairly well, but may drift a bit over several hours. Or use something like a tentacle (https://www.tentaclesync.com/) and leave on each camera.

    Hi David,
the version I have installed is 6.3.98. I tried to upgrade directly to 6.3.105 but it wasn't possible. Then I tried with the next available upgrade (6.3.101) but it didn't work neither.
Does it affect the installation if the side handle is not attached?

Might be best to try without the side handle attached. That Fw for the side handle might upgrade after the FW is installed without the side handle.

    Worth a try.
