Love to see more of the workflow, especially how it's moved into things like unity.

Where is the depth coming from if you only have the one camera per direction without total overlap? Does that mean you are tessellating a displaced sphere and then re-rendering each VR eye?

Look at the picture titled "Rig3." That is a stereo pair that points at the primary point of focus for the filmmaker, which covers about a 170 degree hemisphere to the front of the viewer. The rest of the cameras are 2D. So, a more accurate way of describing this rig is "3D + 2D."

Any thoughts about doing this real-time? Seems near impossible to me, but what do I know?

Realtime stitching/viewing on a Rift is hard. Not impossible... but hard. And for 3D, very hard! But we have a very good and consistent dailies workflow that flows smoothly into editorial, color, and finish. Also for binaural + tetrahedral audio.
