Jim said they've revised down the number of Tattoos they'd planned to produce from 100 to 20 based on a huge cost of producing the prototypes. By the sounds of it the 20 (including one for Peter Jackson and one for Soderbergh) are going out fairly soon. He expected Stage 2 Epic production would commence within about 2 months of Tattoo results coming back in.

When asked about overall Epic and Scarlet timetables Jim said he'd be suicidal if they weren't out by the Summer.

The ASIC is up to 29 layers (from memory) - he said it was the most complex ASIC ever produced for any purpose in any industry.

Some of the other cool points for me were the ability to sync cameras and sound together using the GPS clock in Epic/Scarlet. Also EDL scripting support in the new RC-X is a HUGE deal.

The 15mbps REDray footage was astonishing. They projected using Sony's new 4K which is the size of a smartcar. They then graded live on a Pablo to the projector - ubercool. Apparently REDRay is getting a new name as it's no longer using optical discs - just solid state etc.

On the post side they mentioned it wouldn't be long until we could truncate R3D files in order to hand off VFX shots etc. with full raw capabilities without needing the entire digital negative on hand. Also, Tangent Wave support in RC-X was demoed (probably not new news) - support for the Euphonix MC Color will be out soon. Was great to see the LiftGammaGain capabilities in action. The idea of this kind of one-light grading that can then be shoved back in the camera with an SD card is huge.

The REDgunner has to be seen to be believed. Also the new larger handheld rig and custom baseplate & proprietary dovetail look great. Looks easy as pie to go from handheld to tripod with Epic/Scarlet.
