The Red Nikon mount should start shipping in November with production ramping up in December, so I imagine by the time you get your Epic-X the Nikon mount will be shipping in good amounts...

More likely than not it's a FW800 cable problem - FireWire 800 is a notoriously fickle technology. Get good quality, brand new cables and treat them with TLC.
