I've used AfterEffects quite a bit with an Avid MC editor. Automatic Duck to bring the Avid timeline in to AfterEffects or Premiere then relink to the original R3Ds there.

For straight to DVD and web stuff I'll usually run 10:1

Be sure to get the newer 8mm cine Samyang/Rokino/whatever. The older version didn't have a detachable hood and it started to creep...
