A friend of mine has wrapped shooting a feature film, and I've been working on creating sync sound DNxHD 36 proxies out of Redcine-X and Avid MC. (Thanks to a lot of help from people on the Avid Workflow forum, I've bee able to get this done! ;)

While doing this work, I encountered a day of shooting where the camera .R3D files were out of sync with the smart slate (the audio BWF files were in sync with the slate). However I encountered another day when all three--picture, sound and slate--were out of sync with each other (each had a different timecode). The other 14 days were fine. ;)

So my ? is, "Who is generally responsible on set to ensure that the slate, camera and sound recorder are all properly synced to each other? The DP also operated, so would he at least be responsible for the camera to smart slate sync? Or would it be the 1st AC? The DIT (there was no on-set transcoding/dailies creation being done)?

Also, do you have any rules of thumb for trying to prevent this problem from occuring?

THANKS VERY MUCH!

ok,
I load my R3Ds into PProCS6 and edit natively on a 4k timeline. Export an XML to Resolve. Grade in Resolve and export using the XML roundtrip to FCPX OR Export to FCPX options. Either way, when going back to PPro and importing the Resolve XML it finds the graded media and when loading it into the media bin i get the error "missing codec" I can see blank .mov files but it wont play them. Even externally via Quicktime they are blank files (but full-size 2-3GB) but play 'black' They show up as .mov files in "get info" but in PPro they 'info' as R3Ds...

Now is this because Im loading 1080p Resolve Lite files back into a 4k timeline or am I missing something? i hasten to add i'm brand new to this and will need baby-step answers... apologies!

As far as I can see, I'll have to complete the edit in PPro and export a .mov. Then grade in Resolve and then export a .mov Then load back into PPro and add titles. Then export a .mov again.

Not hideous but hardly mastering in 4K...

Any thoughts..?

I was hoping you guys could share any QuadHD/4k workflow tips ... specially related to workflow speed. I primarily work in nuke, and I was noticing a lot of my end to end workflow time was occurring in compositing. Here's setting's I have found useful in drastically speeding things up (but I'm not an expert on 4k workflow, so take this with a grain of salt ... and would appreciate it if others could correct these settings):

On the "project Settings" I select "proxy mode", "scale","proxyscale=.25" and "readproxy files = if larger" (i am thinking maybe the readproxy files should be set to always?).
I use the ctrl-p to toggle the proxy mode (when i do file write operations i turn this off, i also am having problems with this toggle, and sometimes i have to clear cache or my write nodes mess up for some reason).
I use the "downrez" mode at 1, (i'm using the proxy rather then downrezing, i am not sure when to use downrezing over proxy)
On the "preferences" i set "localize to" to my fast SSD drive.
I click on "flip book this viewer" with the "background" setting on. (I am not sure exactly when i should do this vs do play (caching) in the main viewer).

Anyway, doing these things makes my workflow go about the same speed as a normal 1080p workflow (if i don't use these type of settings my workflow is about 6 times slower then 1080p). Any other hints or comments on speeding up 4k workflow will be greatly appreciated. I btw composite from a quadhd DI openexr zips file rather then the raw r3d (also over half my files are vfx openxr). On my red images, i am often doing complex warping on them, so I am doing complex operations on the red data.

---- answers --- I am just going to append to this starting post ... assuming someone wants to speed up their 4k workflow

>> I use the "downrez" mode at 1, (i'm using the proxy rather then downrezing, i am not sure when to use downrezing over proxy)
Use the downrez mode when your doing a lot of roto work. Also look to masking via color grading instead of roto work on anything organic (like mask foreground branches rather then roto branches/leaves in the foreground).

Here's a nuke link (http://www.nukepedia.com/written-tut...ent-workflows/ ) isn't for 4k but is ok.

I'm still missing a lot of information on 4k linux network rendering (to me 4k needs different settings since the sizes of disk to ram to graphics card is a bit different).

I have:

Macbook Pro 8,2 with 2ghz Quad core i7, a SSD boot drive, HDD in the optical, 16GB RAM, Radeon HD 6490 (PCIe), Intel HD Graphics 3000 (built-in)

Mac Pro 2009 quad core, radeon hd, 4 HDDs (all 1TB 7,200)

Thunderbolt Display

Sonet with Red Rocket.

What I am looking for is the best way to take advantage of the mercury playback engine in cs6. MAINLY and most importantly Premiere Pro.

I believe my only two options are pop a compatible video card into the tower or buy a new laptop. Is this correct?

If a new laptop is most sensible solution, I would want it to be thunderbolt ready so that I could use the red rocket and thunderbolt display - pointing me towards the Asus G55. I would be open to popping a new video card into the tower, but what's the cost of a good card to add to the tower and would the investment be unwise as it's a 4 year old beast? Let me know what you would do.

Also, let me know if I am correct in believing there is really no upgrade path possible for my macbook pro. It really is a pretty good workhorse minus the video card.

Hello everyone.

In an attempt to help those of you who are on tight budgets, and do not have big production companies backing your work, I submit the following:

For a couple of years now I have been buying Hudzee Internal Hard Drive Storage Cases to store our filled hard drives. I finally got sick and tired of paying that exorbitant, ridiculous price of $7.50/ea (including shipping), for a "plastic box" made in China.

After doing some extensive research, I would like to give you two options for MUCH better priced cases (also made in China). Both work just fine, and also leave enough room to enable you to seal the drive in its anti-static silver plastic bag, "and" a typed paper sheet of the contents. And, the cost "includes" shipping.

Check them out here:

Clear Top-Lid HD Cases:
