The best rig for 3D steadicam

3D is not dead or dying and it never will be as long as humans have two eyes. Politics and economics have had complex and sometimes negative effects on the 3D films we have seen released in the past few years, but as REDUSERs, let's do something more than just chat about it. Let's get out there and use the best available tools to make the best 3D productions anyone has ever seen.

Many "unbiased" individuals have opinions about what the best 3D rig is, but if we compare feature for feature, no rig on the market today can stack up to the 21st Century 3D BX4.5 for lightweight full featured performance and unmatched value. Without a quarter wave retarder (not recommended but many people do this) the BX4.5 weighs just 11.8lbs. No other rig anywhere near this weight offers 11 axis motorization, use of zooms or primes, use of 4x5.6 drop in or 6x6 rotating filters, fast three point camera alignment and the low cost, high build quality of BX4.5. 22 years of stereoscopic experience and smart engineering eliminate the need for exotic materials and overly complex industrial design.

Every function of the BX4.5 can be motorized, not just IO and convergence. Roll, pitch, yaw and height can all be optionally motorized for maximum control via remote. You can also remove all motors and operate completely manually for maximum weight savings. Even if you are not utilizing steadicam, the ease of use, speed and light weight of the BX4.5 are phenomenal when compared to previous generation rigs. One AC of average strength can easily pick up and move a fully built BX4.5 rig, and that's the way it should be.

The BX4.5 was recently one of the primary rigs on the New York unit of Metallica Through The Never, and although that was shot on AlexaM, BX4.5 was built for RED EPIC and Scarlet.

This YouTube demo shows another xample of the BX4.5 flying on steadicam. If you have a 3D TV or any kind of 3D glasses, please use the YouTube 3D player to view

I just went to see Ironman 3 and was very very disappointed in the 3D. What the hell are Hollywood producers doing eroding the 3D industry away with this line up of pathetic dimensionalized 2D to 3D features? Don't they know they are having a negative impact on the movie going public? Movies like Ironman 3 and all of the dimensionalized 2D films I have seen are preventing the industry from flourishing in my opinion. What does everyone else think of this?

The day I walked out on a 3D film set... to defend 3D

Yesterday, I put my money where my mouth is…I walked out of a film set (the first time ever). Admittedly I was consulting at only $1000 per day, so that helped me make up my mind. I’ve previously come down heavy on Stereographers for bending backward and compromising their craft.

So what should a stereographer do when faced with the nouveau 3D crowd? A Director or Cinematographer, or end client that does not like being told they aren’t thinking in 3D? The answer is not as simple as mine was, and I’ll be the first to recognize that every job exists to put food on the table... read the rest and some ideas to possibly avoid such situation, here: Fishy 3D -Should a Stereographer swim against the 3D tide?

I'd like to hear your thoughts.

(P,s I do know the Hierarchy; Everyone works for the Director, period. Here's a comment I replied to on Linkedin: "I hear you, and know the hierarchy. Only I had a teenage drama queen and diva rolled into one, who had some bad ideas on S3D to boot. So thanks, but no thanks."

Just got asked to do a 3D project in brazil. And after looking online for rigs in brazil and coming up empty handed, thought I would post here, instead of renting from NYC and dealing with the whole travel thing. Already got the camera bodies. Just need the rig/support hopefully the TS5 but atom is fine. Will be doing a lot of handheld FYI. So if you have or know someone that can rent us a rig and be a rig tech. Please PM me send me a quote. 3 day shoot.

Think superman returns and harry potter..

These are the only two films I can remember being advertised as having special scenes in 3D, which suggested to me at the time that you would be walking into the cinema and waiting for your cue to stick on your glasses to enjoy the select 3Dness.

Since this time 3D has changed to where we can now watch and even buy full features which were also not just post converted to 3D.

I am toying with idea if budget allows for it to to shoot select scenes and let say then ending to a film in 3D.

Reason for this are that budget won't allow for a full 3D shoot... The story (until the end) probably does not fit the nature of 3D and would not benefit from 3D production... What would be ultra cool from my op, is if at the right time in the film just when the landscape is changing you now put on your 3D glasses on and enjoy the rest of the film to the finish line ending with a bang!

I'm in two minds about this for the following reasons.

1)Advertising a film as a 2D movie with select scenes or an ending in full 3D OR promoting a 3D movie where only a 3rd of it is 3D could be troublesome.

2) I think it would make for a better movie experience if at the right time your drawn into the 3D world but people now days who are used to full feature 3D movies might not approve and kick up a fuss.

Well I would like to hear peoples thoughts on this.

Thanks

One of my friend who works on 3D equipments trade came back from NAB2013, he told me that 3ality has stopped most of their developping work, fired lots of stuff, and left only a few working on supports works and renting out their equipments. Helix no more. Is it true? Anymore informations? Anyway, in Beijing film festival, there are more than 10 companies came with 3ality's Rigs looking for opportunities, only one korean company with one P+S(my choice) and four 3Ality, no stereotec(which I think is the best but a bit out of my budget).
