I love anamorphics and I would like to discuss with you their implementation on the mx.

I would like to gather information and experience on the subject in this thread.

This thread is a work in progress.
If you notice any incorrect or incomplete information please do tell.
Any contribution is very much welcome.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thread topics:

1. Anamorphic misconceptions
2. Recommended editing workflow
3. Final aspect ratio output
4. Demonstration of lenses squeeze factors
5. Can we get a higher resolution anamorphic image than the 4k ana mode out of the mx?
6. Would it be possible to get bigger frames than the current modes for anamorphics purposes out of the mx?
7. Articles and resources on the subject

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Anamorphic misconceptions

A. When unsqueezing anamorphic footage you get more resolution

This is misleading as you do get more resolution when desqueezing the footage in terms of a bigger file, but not on actual captured detail resolution.

On film you would actually get more resolution when using an anamorphic lens, because more of the film area would get used:

But on digital cameras, depending on the size of the sensor, there is actually less of the sensor that is used to record the image.
Resulting in a resolution loss compared to the sensor full capabilities.

For instance on the mx:

The image is squeezed horizontally by the anamorphic lens but only a portion of the sensor is used to record it.

B. Doesn't the anamorphic lens squeeze more detail horizontally that is then revealed when unsqueezing the footage?

It does not.
Photoshop pixel grid view gives us a handy tool to see what is actually happening when you unsqueeze the footage:

The same pixel information is stretched horizontally, there is no new hidden detail gain.
There is a resolution gain horizontally but only in file size.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. Recommended editing workflow:

A. Horizontal desqueeze (bigger file than shot) vs Vertical squeeze (smaller file than shot)

Desqueezing the footage horizontally/changing the pixel aspect ratio is the recommended workflow.

Even if there is no gain in detail resolution by doing that, and you are stretching the footage, there is no resolution loss that occurs compared to reducing the height of the footage.

B. When to desqueeze?

That should ideally be done at the finishing stage from your grading and finishing tools.

If you have to convert from RAW earlier in the post chain, in order of recommendation:

- 16bit DPX if all your post tools support it
- EXR
- 10bit DPX as the third choice (the old standard)

C. Which debayer or resolution settings?

When using the red rocket:

- full resolution full debayer quality

When using a software decode:

- a neutral filter is going to be the ideal choice most of the time

You don't want a sharpening filter like Lanczos at this stage in the game on what amounts to an image enlargement.
Same goes for a softening filter like Gaussian, you're already softening the image simply by de-squeezing.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Final output aspect ratio

Different squeeze factors lenses with different frame recording sizes will yield different aspect ratios on the mx.

The standard DCP resolutions are:

2K
2048 x 858 (2.39 aspect ratio)
1998 x 1080 (1.85 aspect ratio)

4k
4096 x 1716 (2.39 aspect ratio)
3996 x 2160 (1.85 aspect ratio)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I tested the 4k ana mode on my mx.
Very nice to have desqueezed footage straight out of the camera.
The workflow is great.

But when I watched the footage on my computer I was disappointed at how bad it looked compared to my 4kws.

So I looked into it and pulled this comparison:

No wonder the 4k ws footage looked better!

On the epic, what is the best mode for anamorphics and how much of a resulting resolution would you get?

thanks!

Hi guys,

Here's the deal, bought a Tokina 11-16 Lens, threw it on my nikkon mount and the image is EXTREMELY dark, the Raw image is basically black!! :cursing: and the RC3 image begins to show some detail though it is still incredibly dark and distorted. When I take off the Lens the Raw image turns into a whitish or bright black color and the RC3 image gives a completely white color so I'm assuming the sensor is fine? I can provide images if necessary, I have played with all the settings, I have calibrated the camera (black shading), restored factory settings, adjusted brightness, white balance etc... The only thing that even brought out an image was increasing the exposure. Is this a lens problem? if so what could be wrong with the lens? Or is this my camera? this is a RED ONE by the way... Thank you in advance for all your help, you guys are my last hope before I start smoking myself to death haha *gulp* this is so depressing :frown:

On the 1st day everything is fine, then about halfway through the second day of shooting we run into this issue that persists until it is returned to the rental house who continually claim to fix it:
