Zeiss ZE primes VS Canon EF Primes

I am curious to know what benefits I would gain by using Zeiss ZE primes (not CP2s) vs my current crop of good canon lenses (28 1.8, 35 2, 50 1.4, 85 1.8). I chose the set as they all share a common filter size (the 35mm was adapted) and perform well (not perfect but all are $300-400). I just worked with the ZE lenses for a day on a film. I like their construction and the focus is smooth as its not designed to be turned by a computer. I believe the degree of focus rotation is the same as a Canon as the ZE are still photo lenses, unless I am missing something. Also the ZE lenses like the Canon are all different lengths, making mat box adjustments necessary. As I like the ZE lenses, a $10,000 purchase for a set, I ponder if its better to just put that towards a CP2 or Canon CN primes, "real" cine primes (not the best of the best but for the price I cant beat them). How to capture false colors and other display tools to something?

Is there anyway to capture the false colors or any of the display tools somehow? Even if I have to use a third party device I am just wondering if there is any workflow for this? When Epic first came out I tried looking into it then and haven't thought about it since, but now am pondering again...

Grain issue on ISO 800

Hi guys,

just want to have a final and correct answer, because I had a discussion with DP who shot a corporate for me.
He is saying that SCARLET's and EPIC's MX default ISO is 800 and shooting and light measurement should be worked around it.

I am saying that default ISO is 320 and that on higher ISO this cameras are giving very nasty grain.

The end result is on the link below. Yes, he shot on 800, there is grain, but he is saying its normal, acceptable and its ok.....

I was directing and finalizing this project, and I had to use NEAT VIDEO (which helped me a lot in post) to fix all grainy shots.

Which upgrade? Dragon or Epic?

Which would be better? Essentially they're the same price. No one knows what Dragon will look like image-wise, so we can't judge 100% accurately if it will be worth the upgrade price. What are your opinions?

Edge Assist over HDMI while Red Touch 5.0 stays normal?

This might be obvious somewhere but I can't figure out if it's possible.

Can I use my HDMI output and keep that in perpetual Edge Assist mode, while the Red Touch 5.0 screen stays in "normal" mode?

Scarlet for weddings?

Has it been done before? Dumb question, I'm sure it has. More like, is it practical? Weddings in 4K? Seems legit to me, but I may be biased. What are the pros, cons of shooting weddings with a Scarlet? What configuration is best? Handheld, shoulder, tripod? Is the size too intrusive to get your subjects acting natural? Just curious, because I would love to have a RED camera, and what better way to pay for than getting paid to make wedding films?

Abnormal amount of stuck pixels (colored grain), within tolerance?

Been noticing more and more some "stuck pixels" or permanent colored grain when shooting and while I know it being a scarlet instead of an epic that tolerances were more lax, is this considered acceptable?

PAL 1080 25 fps

I have a client that requested the footage I'm shooting on my scarlet be converted to pal 1080p 25 fps. I was planning to shoot at 4K HD at 25 and convert to 1080 in red cine X. Is there anything else I need to do?

Considering a Scarlet as a Stills Camera; Good, Bad, or Indifferent?

My wife is thinking about buying a Scarlet as a stills camera. Is anyone here using one as such? She is currently shooting a Nikon D4 and a D800 so the ability to use existing lenses is appealing. Does this make sense as a camera? Thanks!

FPS problem

Hi guys. I have a problem with frame rate.
The video was recorded in 30fps but REDCineX, DaVinci or any other application sees the footage as a 25fps.
I found out that when the 30 fps was on the digits displaying fps went Yellow (which means varispeed according to Manual). It looks like the TC is 25 but record was 30.
My point is to get the source 30 fps footage and convert it into ProRes 1:1.
Any ideas or similar problems?

Scarlet Dragon?

Okay, I'm just a little confused at this point. I've heard multiple times since NAB that the Dragon upgrade would only be for Epic, but you could upgrade your Scarlet to the Mysterium Epic if you wanted. But I read here: http://www.red.com/faqs/dragon/scarlet that you could upgrade your Scarlet to Scarlet Dragon, with "full specs coming soon" That would be a perfect happy medium for me if it's not old information. Does anyone know RED's plans? I'm hoping for a response from one of the big dogs, Jarred or Jim, but any knowledge would be great... This is kind of huge for me. :D

SCHEDULED VIOLENCE Feature Documentary - Shot on Scarlet

Hey Everyone,

Just released the trailer for our film shot on our Scarlet (Samus) called Scheduled Violence.

We follow Joe Doerksen a professional MMA fighter from Winnipeg, Canada for a year as he enters the ring for his 64th and 65th professional fights.

With more fights than any other Canadian and having been to the UFC a total of 9 times, Joe has to decide how much longer he can keep this up... and if he can win his way to one last shot in the UFC.

Check it out.

We used primarily SLR lenses and LED lighting, fairly gorilla filming though we did get a jib out for a day or two for grappling and striking training. We also used a micro dolly for all of our moves.

The film was edited in Adobe Premiere, coloured in Premiere and After Effects.

Let me know what you think! Glad to be releasing something using the RED, very happy with the crisp, clean visuals.
